Four controllers round a Dreamcast. A GoldenEye night on the N64. The PS2 co-op campaign you never did finish. None of those shipped with matchmaking, a friends list, or voice chat, and plenty of the games that did have since had their servers quietly switched off. The game still runs fine. It's everything around the game that went missing.
- Nobody turns up at 9pm by accident. When a game's players are few and scattered across time zones, "who's on tonight?" stops working. Pick a time instead, invite the people who own it, and everyone gets a reminder before it starts.
- Bring your own chat. Every match gets its own thread, so you can sort out teams, rules, house mods, and which patch everyone is running - none of which the game has to support.
- Couch co-op counts. Split-screen and LAN nights are real matches here, with a place and a time attached, not just an online lobby.
We keep adding platforms, too - new hardware and old. If you are the one keeping a game alive, this is the part it never came with.
